About our Puppy Training Classes

In our puppy training and socialisation classes we aim to start you and your new dog off in the right direction by following the Kennel Club Good Citizen Scheme.

ABC For Dogs supplies puppy training classes and dog training in medway, Kent.

Puppy obedience classes or Puppy training and socialization classes are a great way to socialise your puppy in a controlled environment and meet other puppy owners.

The classes are designed for dogs from 12 weeks up to 6 months old. We concentrate on structured socialisation, basic dog obedience, fun and games and endeavor to help you with any behaviour problems you have along the way.

We will also be on hand to help and offer advice on any dog behaviour issues you may be having at home.

Only reward-based puppy training methods are used in our Puppy Classes – Treats, toys, praise and play.

Your Puppy Will Learn:

Come when called (name and recall).
Sit, lie down, stand on command.
Start to walk on a loose lead without pulling.
Get used to being handled and examined.
‘Stay’.
‘Settle’.
‘Gentle’ (taking food from hands gently).
‘Leave / Exchange’.
Socialize with adults, children, and other puppies.
Greet people appropriately without jumping up

Puppies will be allowed to interact in carefully controlled small groups to ensure they learn good manners around other puppies, do not get scared, and do not learn to play roughly or aggressively. Puppies will be matched for size, age, and experience, and play will be carefully supervised to ensure that all puppies learn to be confident with others.

Please note – in some classes, the mix of puppies may make it impossible to conduct puppy play sessions safely. Puppy play sessions will only be offered if they can be run without causing harm.

There are four levels starting with Puppy Foundation of the Scheme, namely Puppy Foundation, Bronze, Silver and Gold, each one developing an owners understanding, while building a dog’s confidence and levels of domestic obedience skills.

Group Dog and Puppy Training Walks

About Group Walks

Group training Walks are social training walks for dogs and puppies.

With dog training we often find that it can be difficult to transfer the skills learnt in obedience training classes to real life situations.  

Why does this happen?  Because in training classes, we set our dogs up to succeed.  We create a calm learning environment to help our dog’s listen, learn and process all the skills we are teaching them with minimal distraction.  When we’re out in the ‘real world’ we can’t always control what happens – off lead dogs, birds, wildlife, livestock, people who want to say ‘hi’ – the list goes on!  Understandably, our dog’s may find it more difficult to listen and it sometimes feels like all their learning has gone out of the window.  Training walks bridge that gap.

What Do We Do on the Walks?

Under Adrian from ABC for Dogs supervision and a small group of 4 dogs/puppies per walk you’ll quickly see what a difference group training walks will make in your dog’s socialisation and obedience training.

Training Walks take place in different locations so our dogs and puppies can get used to a range of environments, sights and smells. 

 On every walk we practice the core skills of lead walking and focus but as the walks are real life training in real life settings, we also use the events that naturally occur as training opportunities; for example, meeting other dogs, crossing roads, seeing wildlife and livestock, sit / stay in new surroundings.  On some walks there may be the opportunity for some off lead time to practice recall and social skills if safe and appropriate for the group on the day.

What Do We Cover In Our Dog Training Walks?

Sit and stay and impulse control
How to be calm and focused around other dogs
General obedience walking on and off lead
How to meet and greet other dogs 
Recalls from distractions

How and where:

To attend a puppy training walk needs to be fully inoculated and up to 6 months old.

To attend an adult dog walk your dog needs to be 7 months plus and sociable around dogs and people.

PLEASE NOTE These Group Walks are not for reactive Dogs or dogs with ingrained behaviour issues (i.e. severe nervousness). Dogs with this type of issue will benefit from a one-on-one training sessions before attending a group walk.

Fee To Attend is £25 Per Dog,
The session is usually between 60 and 90 minutes depending on the day and location.
Limit of 4 dogs with 1 handler per session.

What is Dog Scent Work?

Scent work is an activity that mimics the abilities of working detection dogs (such as Police and Border Force) to locate a scent, and communicate to the handler that the scent has been found.

Scent Work is a positive, challenging activity that allows dogs the opportunity to use their strongest natural sense in a way that’s fun, engaging, and that builds and strengthens the bond between handler and dog.

Using their nose is the primary sense that all dogs possess and on our scent work courses we look to develop this, forming a greater bond between dog and handler.

The benefits of dog scent work are numerous and include:

Mental Stimulation: Scent work requires the dog to use their brain, making it an excellent mental workout for the dog. This mental stimulation can help prevent boredom and reduce stress in dogs.

How Do We Teach Dog Scent Work?

What I will teach you is my methodology to teaching scent work built on 25 years of working Police Dogs, also Incorporating an introduction to clicker training, as this will be used to develop your dogs indication on the scent.

The easiest way to describe your dog’s sense of smell is to imagine that your dog smells like you see. So, for example, I rub a little scent (say my hand, olive oil, oregano…anything) onto an object, your dog will “see” that scent with his nose. In fact his nose is MUCH more powerful than your eyes.

Laying the foundations to this skill takes a little dedication, but it’s a pretty easy skill for any dog that loves something… like food or toys.

The key is to associate the smell with the object the dog likes.

There is nothing better than seeing how your dog can learn to identify and search for a target scent. Problem solving, mental enrichment, teamwork, confidence and of course FUN are just some of the amazing benefits of scent work for both the dog and the handler.

Each course is run over a 6 week block for beginners, intermediate and advanced abilities. Each course is limited to a maximum of 8 spaces.

A pre-booking system for the course is in place. This is done in a block of 6 x 2 hour lessons – £150 per block of 6 lessons (£25 per lesson).
