Nervous dog

Dog behaviour problems can be cute and endearing or they can be destructive or drive you up the wall. In most cases behaviour problems are communication issues.

When working with behaviour issues in dogs it is important to establish  as to why your dog is exhibiting the behaviour. A dog does not exhibit behaviours to make you feel guilty , or to dominate you, or to be stubborn (plus a whole multitude of other human reasons). Dogs do not think like that they generally display behaviours (good and bad) for a reason.

For example, a common dog behaviour issue is barking. Most dogs vocalize in one way or another. They may bark, howl, whine and more. Excessive barking is considered a behaviour problem.

Before you can correct excessive barking, it is important determine why your dog is vocalizing in the first place. The most common types of barking are:

  • Warning or alert
  • Playfulness and excitement
  • Attention-seeking
  • Anxiety
  • Boredom
  • Responding to other dogs
Stressed Labrador

Once you have determined the reason you can then start working on the problem.

This is the approach that I take with all the behaviour issues that I come across - first task , establish why the dog is exhibiting the behaviour.

As a dog behaviourist (kent) dog trainer, I combine my dog training experience with my knowledge of dog behaviour problems to help owners resolve their dogs issues.

I offer dog behaviour consultations within your home.
